ULEZ – THE INCREASING INTERSECTION OF LAW, LIFE AND POLITICS
In a modern society, what form or context does law take – and what does that mean for at least some students, prospective lawyers in or thinking of joining the ever-changing business of law?
The intersection of law with other fields, such as UK politics, is growing – perhaps akin to its indivisibility with Politics in DC. One very topical example is the growing dispute over #ULEZ expansion in London (with other cities looking at this also).
Will it result in a Parliamentary Hearing (there is a petition with almost 27,000 votes for this already – see the graphic below), Judicial Review, Litigation, Civil Lawsuits, Planning Disputes, Employment Issues, Compensation Claims – and who knows what else is possible. When can a public authority require an individual or business to sell or scrap their property – and what is the legal and evidential basis that would justify this? Something that could impact so many people and businesses in a weak economy is surely going to result in plenty of work for lawyers. While technology is one of the faces of change in the industry, the industry will never be boring since it is a curious reflection of daily life itself. [DK]
