“Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future”  – John F. Kennedy

Change is a constant – and it’s all around. As the world becomes a vast data ecosystem, clients face a growing array of data challenges every day – and they increasingly expect their legal services providers to help them respond in real-time. They also need the efficiency of technology to keep costs down.

To understand what 2020 means for the future of the legal industry – is to embrace change fully and reflect it in new, evolving, innovative ways to do things. And this is why it was such a pleasure to spend time with Ian Campbell, the forward-thinking CEO of iCONECT – fielding a few fireside questions on what they’re up to and how they’re helping clients respond to the latest challenges of today’s data economy.

Have expectation levels for review platforms changed in our industry?

Ian Campbell

Absolutely. I think the smartphone has a lot to do with it. People expect that they can immediately ‘Jump Right In’. A platform has to be intuitive. No training, no videos, just a simple visual experience which allows you to get the job done without thinking about how you got it done. Small items like thumbnails of documents and the ability to retrieve forgotten passwords make a huge difference in user experience. The expectation of our clients is going to continue to raise the bar and as a long time innovator in the space, we’re continuing to look over the horizon to see how we can meet and exceed industry needs.

David T Kinnear

Everything in our world seems to be self serve from airline tickets to online food-ordering. Thoughts?

Ian Campbell

If the platform is intuitive people don’t mind doing it themselves. It gives them a sense of control and power as they focus on the outcome. People understand items like drag-and-drop, searching, foldering, producing as they do these action in current tools, or have someone else do it for them, usually a project manager. The ability for users to take control of the process and not have to rely on a third-party skillset or timeline will help them achieve their goals quicker as well as instilling a level of confidence.

Video seems to be everywhere.

Ian Campbell

It is. From smartphones to security cameras to police body cameras we see videos every day on the news, on YouTube, and within social media programs to communicate thoughts and ideas. Overlooking this as an evidence source is a mistake, however dealing with those files has historically been cumbersome. Users are looking for a seamless and clean way to deal with a multimedia file as if it were a document. Tag it. Comment on it. Focus on the timestamp where the evidence actually exists in a long video. These actions need to be seamless part of the workflow. Multimedia files are only going to increase and we are excited about where we currently are in that development Journey.

David T Kinnear

It seems like the problems of archival and security extend beyond legal?

Ian Campbell

Whether you are a police department looking to archive video and evidence or, a corporation looking to create a due-diligence library it’s really all the same stuff. Put all the information in one place, secure it and then give credentials to those who need to come in and work against that data. In any of those scenarios they’re working toward an outcome. We’ve seen lots of creative ways to use our technology outside of legal and that is only going to continue.

David T Kinnear

AI is seamless in Spotify and iTunes. Shouldn’t it be that way in legal?

Ian Campbell

100%. We’ve come to expect AI to work to assist us in our everyday tasks whether it’s finding a song or shopping online. In legal with our recent iCONECT v10 we’ve embedded Analytics and AI throughout the application to prompt, steer, and direct the user toward the appropriate information. When combined with standard review techniques the results are astounding. We’ve seen cases where we’ve literally saved millions of dollars for clients. And, we’re continuing to look for ways to harness the power of AI while making the interaction with the AI as seamless as possible.

The privacy of information is key in all areas of business. Legal too.

Ian Campbell

The newly proposed EDRM diagram has an arrow all the way across the bottom where in the identification of private information and document risk is a key component of the EDRM case Journey. We agree that whether you’re reporting on documents risk or, looking for specific PII (Personally Identifiable Information) or, you’re looking to redact documents automatically, we’ve developed tools so that it can be done without a lot of cost or additional steps to workflow. The privacy of information is going to continue to dominate the landscape and we’re excited about the tools that we’re bringing to the table to make it a seamless component of a users workflow.

Nobody likes it when the pricing changes halfway through a project. How do you control this?

Ian Campbell

We license our product in a few different ways but the majority of our licensing is by user. Although the gigabytes in a case could increase exponentially over the case life as custodians and new data points are added, we do find that the stabilizing number in a case appears to be the user account. This allows for a company upfront to determine a realistic cost against the project regardless of how big it gets. The added Advantage for law firms and corporations is that they don’t get penalized for adding more data.

David T Kinnear

There seem to be a lot of cloud-based systems out there these days and you seem to offer more than that?

Ian Campbell

Some firms are very sensitive about where their data lives. Unlike competitive eDiscovery solutions that only offer a ‘give it to us and we’ll host it for you’ approach, we are very comfortable installing the platform behind a firewall. We have several defense contractors and corporations who have especially sensitive data and are not interested in a cloud deployment and, putting a system behind their firewall including multi levels of security can be accomplished seamlessly. With that said, as some firms move toward a cloud only IT direction, we’ve got that covered too with our worldwide network of legal service providers. Our ‘optionality’ gives us a definite leg up on our competition.

David T Kinnear

For some larger more complex cases people need help.

Ian Campbell

You’re right. Although self-serve is always an option, some projects need specific consultation in order deal with legal, data and jurisdictional nuances. As mentioned earlier, we have a worldwide network of providers plus, a group of Consultants inside our NetworX program who can assist with project management. Our support staff is regarded as one of the strongest in the industry and are always willing to lend a helping hand through our concierge service for people who need some extra guidance on optimizing their workflow and setting things up for success.

David T Kinnear

In order to adopt a platform like iCONECT, people are looking for a compelling reason to change from what they are currently using. Is there one?

Ian Campbell

Everybody gets comfortable. Don’t listen to me on this one. Listen to those that have been there done that.

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change” -Albert Einstein

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” -Nelson Mandela

“Change is the law of life, and those who look only to the past and present are certain to miss the future” -John F. Kennedy

The iCONECT feature set meets and exceeds those of other tools. It’s amazing to me how many people have a ‘wow, I’ve never seen a product that could do that’ moment when they see a demo. The product is a culmination of our depth of experience along with the product, licensing and workflow features mentioned in this article.

This industry is a fun place to be right now and we’re excited about the opportunities that lie ahead not only for us but for our clients and all those involved in ediscovery.
