“What you measure, you can manage. What you manage, you can improve.”

As we predicted 18 months ago, we are seeing the leading edge of a major storm front that will envelope the legal space over the next 3-5 years. The outer bands of activity – the first rain – was clear to the naked eye in the back-end of ’18 and the beginning of ’19. An uptick in investor interest – placing bets for the coming fights. An increase in main street recognition for the role of technologies that hitherto had been dismissed as fanciful. A growing awareness of data and its value. A recognition of the Big Four, yes, but also for a new generation of providers that are not law firms.

Managed risk is better than risk.

There comes a point where you have to take it seriously. That is, you have to take a calm, methodical view of key touchpoints and indicators in the industry – like the weather reports we rely on. To fail to do so is to witness a stall in the face of a storm – proving as calamitous as the shipwreck in the Perfect Storm. The flip-side is failing to leverage the opportunity that this storm will generate.

Preparation is always better than the alternative.
